OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) are the two models under which an Asian factory produces for your brand: with OEM the factory builds to your design and specifications; with ODM you adapt and brand a product the factory already developed.

Which one fits your stage
ODM is the short path: the product exists, the tooling exists, and you reach the market fast with low investment. The trade-off is that the same product can reach your competitor with a different label.
OEM is the differentiation path: the product is truly yours, with your specs and your tooling. It costs more, takes longer and demands tighter quality control, because the factory is building something it doesn’t know by heart.
The catch when sourcing in China
Many companies that present themselves as OEM factories are actually traders reselling someone else’s ODM catalog. Knowing who you are really talking to, factory or middleman, changes the price, the quality control and your leverage. Verifying it takes being on the ground, not in the chat.
The common mistake
Developing an OEM product without protecting your intellectual property from the first contact. Confidentiality and non-circumvention agreements are signed before sharing designs, with instruments that hold up legally in China, not generic templates in English. A design shared without protection can come back to the market manufactured for someone else.
Our purchasing consultancy in Asia includes on-site factory verification and legal protection for your developments. Write to us before sharing your design.
