The importers registry (padrón de importadores) is the Mexican tax authority’s register that every company or person importing goods into Mexico on a regular basis must be enrolled in. Without an active registration, no customs broker can clear goods in your name.

How it works
Enrollment is processed with the SAT, Mexico’s tax administration, and requires a clean tax standing: an active tax ID, a verified address and a positive compliance opinion. For certain sensitive goods there are additional sector-specific registries on top of the general one: if your product falls in one of those sectors, you need both.
Why it matters if you are setting up in Mexico
It is one of the first things to resolve, before paying supplier deposits and long before shipping. The process takes time, and cargo that reaches the port while the importer’s registration is pending sits in the bonded facility accruing storage while the paperwork catches up. For companies nearshoring into Mexico, this step defines your import start date.
The common mistake
Assuming the registration is forever. The SAT can suspend an importer over tax inconsistencies, an unverifiable address or unmet obligations, and a suspension stops your imports overnight, possibly with cargo already in transit. Registry health is something you monitor, not something you take for granted.
